It won't do any harm, putting your site in Yahoo directory.
It is good backlink to your site.
You might get a little traffic.
I personally havn't submitted my sites to Yahoo, but my site beat sites that are listed in Yahoo.
My main keyword beats alot of sites in the top 10 of Google SERPs that are in Yahoo directory. In fact I have the no1 and 2 spot in the serps for my niche in Google.

Personnally, I think you both are right. Yahoo has the submit express option now (directory listing in 3-5 days although it usually takes 10-15) for only $49. DMOZ is still hit or miss and appears to be on the way out. Yahoo will not automatically give you indexing if your backlinked from another site it spiders (even authority sites).
In short, better to be safe than sorry.

Its realy strange, i have seen my friends site and it is coming in yahoo directory and he did not pay for it.

there are cases that it is good idea to pay for yahoo directory...
one case, a site rank well in google but doesn't in yahoo, he pay for yahoo directory listing to rank in yahoo...

it,s better to submit to any paid directory which gives you site wide links rather than submitting to yahoo.

There's no harm in trying. If you have the money to spend, why not? Yahoo directory listing can still generate good traffic to your site.

 There are lot of directory sites. Why spent your time in Yahoo Directory if you feel it doesn't work?

Non profit sites can get listed in Yahoo directory for free. But for commercial one, either your site listed in DMOZ, or you can pay $299 / year for yahoo directory.
