I think cannonical are a very good think for google. I've never been penalized for using of cannonical links. I change about 2-3 times the link form with a simple redirect 301.

Canonical attributes are really important to get good ranking in Google. Duplicate content is a major issue for search engines as they have to continue to build datacenters to handle the content of the internet.

If you U R L however has terrible rankings then it is okay typically ... helps on promotion and no chance of punishment ..may be u r wrong

About Canonicalization – What about https and http versions? I have a site which is indexed for https, in place of http. I am sure this too is a form of canonical URIs and how do you suggest we go about it?
