Network World today reported that Google has launched a new search engine service specifically for large e-commerce sites. The new Google Commerce Search includes some of the most popular Google search features such as spell checker, query stemming and synonym recognition that are of particular use to e-commerce sites.
"Most sites today don't have good search," says Google Enterprise Search Project Manager Nitin Mangtani. "Commerce Search includes Rich stemming dictionaries. When you go to an e-commerce site, you might not enter the search term in exactly the way it is described by the retailers search catalog. You can say pants or trousers."
According to Mangtani, Google Commerce Search will be priced for e-commerce sites starting at $50,000 per year and will be targeted towards the top 1,000 online retailers in each country where Google is currently operating.
Birkenstock USA was one of the beta testers of Google Commerce Search and is now a public user of the product. Company COO Jeff Kilmer said that Google Commerce Search has helped its clients by creating faster searches with more accurate results.
