I am not saying there are no benefits of backlinks.
Backlinks can surely:
1) Improve your page rank
2) Can drive traffic to your website directly( non search engine traffic)
3) Can drive traffic indirectly to your website. For example if the site with your backlink is well indexed and have high SERP position, then you will get a share of that traffic from search engines too.
The purpose of this article is NOT to say "Hey guys! Stop working to get backlinks".
The purpose is to show the importance of "onsite optimization" to get the better google position.
I think it is clear now.
Thanks.

And another important thing which most of the users dont know, in the beginning is "No Follow" tag in backlinks.
Before spamming any high PR forum or blog always make sure that the blog/forum is not using the no-follow tag for the links.
The links with NO Follow tag are not counted to increase the page rank of your website. They can just send you traffic, of course.
So it is better to search for Do Allow Blogs and Forums before establishing back links for your website(s).
Thanks,

PageRank Wins
Two schools of thought exist in the SEO industry. The SEO copywriters and the Link Mongers. For reasons put forth here, the Link Mongers will always win in the SERPs. _________________ rhetorical choices |

Backlinks are important in 2 ways.
1) First it improves your web page's rank.
2) Second it drives some traffic from the site from where the back link is coming.
So, we cannot say that the back links are not important at all. Most of the business depends on the back links as most of the sites cannot be on the top search positions.
But back links should be "Quality Back links". Quality means
a) Back link should be from high PR site
b) It should come from the site which has the same theme as your site's.
c) The anchor text of your back link should be your keywords.
And also make sure that the back link is not having with "No Follow" tag, or the back link will not be considered to improve your page rank by the search engines, like google.
So, i think it is clear what is the importance of back links.
You see, I am not against the back links:-) I just posted the above post to elaborate the importance of onsite optimization.
Thanks,

Nice post regarding on page optimization. But without any backlinks your site will never be included in the SERPs, do you agree? _________________ air mattress bed for a restful sleep. |

| I'm fairly certain that you definitely need a fair amount of good backlinks to achieve any profitable SERP. |

Absolutely, even with the best on page optimization done if you have no back links it will be impossible to get high rankings on on difficult keywords. _________________ Web Development India
