Are keywords in content a numbers game?

I'm wondering if there's a certain amount of keywords you can add to your content without it being classified as spam by most readers. Is there some kind of benchmark you can use to judge when enough is enough? For example, x number of keywords maximum within a paragraph or article that's so many words long.

Also, do the search engines penalize you if you have too many? I've not really used keywords to their best advantage and would like to do so but am afraid I'd do more harm than good so am a bit hesitant.

I always write content for users not for search engines, so I do not worry about spamming, search engine penalization sort of things basically. If you write content having user in your mind, automatically the content will be keyword rich, this is what I prefer to do most of the times.

You can just cite your target keywords once or twice in the entire article and get a good ranking. It boils down to the quality of the content.

Keyword density should not be more than 5 percent...also content should be written for users and not for search engines...

It's not a number's game. Keyword density is just a myth. You can still get good ranking even if you only cited for keywords once in the entire article. Choosing the title of the article plays a big role.

You can add lot of keywords that you want. But its better to go for 2 to 3 keywords per content.

Nowadays the search engines might not be paying that much attention to the on page items including keyword stuffed pages because links are the key players today.

My rule is: Whenever you have doubts you may be spamming search engines, you are.

Write content for visitors and use your keyword just a bit more often than your english teacher would advise you to use it. And don't worry about keyword density. Here is a real life example. Do a search for "Click here" on Google. You'll see adobe website on #1. Go there. Then, do a search for the phrase "Click here" on adobe's website. You won't find it. So, keyword density doesn't matter.

As with other things, don't over do it, and focus on having a content that will make the reader actually click on the link. Also, come up with a striking, and suitable title that will lure readers.
