The best place to start is with some on-page optimization based on carefuly chosen keywords. Use a keyword research tool to find relevant keywords that have a high keyword effectiveness index. You should work these keywords into the pages.
For off-site optimization, build good quality inbound links and lots of them.

There is no secret to SEO a website. Link building from relevant website /page. You will see traffic coming from search engine when you have 400-500 website linking to your site. Yes this will be tedious work. Work hard in link building and you will see the result.

you need to get links to your all other pages as well not just your home page and also links hold more weight when there on more important pages then the websites links page

Your sites got PR 1, but still zero back links.
You can start SEO with Forum, Social networking and QA sites. You will get good back links for your site.
