After I stopped my PPC campaign, the organic ranking of the site went down drastically.

Does that really affect the organic ranking of the site?

PPC and organic ranking have no direct relation with each other. The traffic you generate from them is different. To rank organically, you must build quality links to your site through forum posting, article submission, link exchange, etc.
