Google Chrome Gains December Browser Market Share

Marketing Charts reports the Google Chrome has increased its share of the U.S. browser market to 18.7 percent in December 2011, representing a 50 percent increase from one year earlier, and following closely behind Firefox, which fell to 20.1 percent for the second rank, according to statistics from StatCounter.

Once again, Microsoft's Internet Explorer came in at first place as the leading browser in the U.S., with 48.3 percent market share in December 2011, unmoved from last year. Safari came in at fourth place (11.5 percent), followed by Opera (0.5 percent).

Analyzing the data on a worldwide basis, however, Chrome beat Firefox for the second rank in December 2011, graduating the year with 27.3 percent of the global market share, beating Firefox's 25.3 percent. Just last year, Chrome represented only 14.8 percent share, while Firefox held 30.8 percent.

Marketing Charts notes that while Internet Explorer has held the first place ranking worldwide, the browser has slowly lost share over the past year, dropping from 46.9 percent in December 2010 to 38.7 percent in December 2011.
