1- Intro

We were at the Internet World Convention at Los Angeles about 10 days

ago and we stopped by the AltaVista booth to ask a few questions. To

our surprise we were told that AltaVista is yet again going through

more changes, and that within 3 weeks many doorway pages will be

dropped causing some people to lose their rankings. We were able to

acquire info about their new ranking algorithms to be implemented

within two weeks from now. Make sure to read the details below if you

plan on having a good ranking when these changes occur.

We also stopped by the BeFree booth. BeFree is one of the leading

Affiliate Program brokers.  They were very excited to see us and

informed us that Submit Express was their top recruiter for their

affiliate programs out of 25,000 recruiters. We would like to thank

everybody that has joined the BeFree program from our site. In case you

have not joined yet and are interested in generating more income from

your site, please go to the link below.

http://destinationsite.com/c?c=76618.37409.0.1.3

You can partner with over 600 merchants such as MP3.com, AltaVista,

Stamps.com, Sprint, CNET, Gifts.com, barnesandnoble.com, etc...

We are the first publication to report on the very important new

AltaVista ranking algorithms.  Feel free to forward this email to all

your friends that have websites who may benefit from this information.

Subscription is completely free and can be obtained at:

Thanks,

Register domain names for $60/ 2 years:

If you have a free-hosted site, we highly recommend getting a domain

name.  This will improve your rankings in the search engines as most

major search engines rank root URLs higher than sub-pages.  Also, many

major search engines block or penalize rankings for sites from free

hosting providers. You can register your own domain name at:

2- AltaVista: Major Ranking Changes Coming Soon

About 10 days ago, at the annual Internet World Convention (Los

Angeles), we stopped by the AltaVista Business Solutions booth.

AltaVista was there to promote the new release of their stand-alone

search engine for those interested in running it on their sites.

We talked to one of their reps and asked a few questions about their

ranking algorithms.  Usually search engines are very secretive about

publishing any information regarding their ranking algorithms, so we

were surprised to be able to find out so much information from them.

You should also know that we are the first publication to report this

info and we are very glad to be able to provide this information first

hand to our readers.

We were informed that in about 2 weeks (from now) AltaVista is going to

change their ranking algorithms to new ones, and that the new

algorithms are designed to eliminate spam and excessive doorway pages.

This is very important info as it could result in ranking changes for

almost everybody.

The new ranking algorithm is based on 5 key factors, which are as

follows:

- Link Popularity

- Click Popularity

- Ownership of Domain

- Content

- Term Vector

AltaVista did not tell us how much weight each of these has in ranking

a site, but it is obvious that a combination of these will decide the

final outcome.  Some of these factors such as click popularity will be

tough to improve, but there are still things that can be done.  Let's

have a look at these in more detail:

- Link Popularity:

AltaVista will look at the number of sites linking to you. The more

sites linking to you, the more weight your site will have.  However,

according to AltaVista, it is also important "who" is linking to you

and "how". Random links from random places will not help much.  They

did not give us more detail about this, but in general here are some of

the criteria that they may be looking at:

- Does the site linking to you have similar content?

- Does the link itself have keywords matching that of the search term?

- How popular is the site linking to you? For example, if disney.com is

linking to you, that will have more weight than an unknown site.

Many other search engines are now using Link Popularity as a ranking

factor. To find out more about Link Popularity and how you can improve

it please see our past newsletter issues from Nov 30, 99 and July 99

at:

http://destinationsite.com/c?c=76618.37409.0.1.7

- Click Popularity:

AltaVista is going to start tracking the number of clicks coming to

your site from their search results.  The more people clicking on your

site, the more weight your site will have.  However, you cannot simply

click on your own site hundreds of times to improve your click

popularity.  AltaVista will keep track of who is clicking on your site

by tracking their IP address, so it will not help by continuously

clicking on your own site. In fact, doing this will cause your ranking

to drop or not move at all.

The search engine DirectHit.com also uses the same methodology for

ranking sites.  To find out more read our August 99 issue.

- Ownership of Domain:

AltaVista will cross reference the iAtlas.com database - which they

recently purchased - to see if the domain belongs to any companies

listed in the database.  If your company is listed in iAtlas.com, your

site will have a heavier weight.  There is other information that

iAtlas.com database contains, for example geographic location and

industry category.  AltaVista did not give us any more details than the

above. However, it is possible that the geographic location and

industry category will play a role for search terms containing such

info.

Currently, AltaVista is using the iAtlas.com database in its results.

For an example, do a search on the keyword "Yamaha". Click below to do

this search now:

http://destinationsite.com/c?c=76618.37409.0.1.8

You will see the first listing as follows:

   1. Yamaha Corporation of America

Yamaha Corporation of America the world's largest music manufacture

   of pianos,keyboards,drums,guitars clavinovas,disklaviers,receives,

   stereos,tuners

   URL: www.yamaha.com/

Last modified on: 19-Mar-2000 - 14K bytes - in English

   [ Translate ] [ More pages from this site ] [ Related pages ]

[ Facts  about: Yamaha Corp Of Am... ]

If you look at the last line, there is a link that says:

[ Facts  about: Yamaha Corp Of Am... ]

This is the part from the iATlas.com database.  You should do a search

with your company name or domain name in AltaVista to see if your site

has such a link. If you do not find such a link, we would urge you to

add your site to iAtlas.com as soon as possible. Below is a link to a

page where you can add your site:

http://destinationsite.com/c?c=76618.37409.0.1.9

iAtlas.com also has partnerships with InfoUSA and Inktomi. Part of

their database may have been collected through those companies.  We

recommend you to also do a search in InfoUSA for your company or domain

name, and if you are not listed there, then submit to them from:

http://destinationsite.com/c?c=76618.37409.0.1.10

In case you don't know what Inktomi is, they are a search engine

database provider that provides listings for many search engines

including HotBot and Yahoo. If you have used our 40 free submission

service, you should already be listed with Inktomi.

- Content:

AltaVista did not tell us what exactly they look for in the page

content, but this should be obvious to many of you who have experience

in search engine placement.  Content could include looking for keywords

in Meta Tags, site title, body text, links and large text.   Currently,

site title or the <TITLE> tag is one of the most important ranking

factors on AltaVista.  However, this will have less weight with the

upcoming changes.

- Term Vector:

Term vector may be a complicated ranking factor used by AltaVista.

They did not give much detail about this, except that all the sub-pages

within a website will be indexed and used to determine its term vector.

Although, we have an idea what this "Term Vector" may be and how it

works, at this point we do not have any confirmed information to pass

along.  Look for our future issues for more information about this.

AltaVista also mentioned that in about 3 weeks a major filtering will

take place and a lot of spam pages will be dropped.  They also said

that if they don't get all the spam this time, then there would be

another filter attempt in about 6 weeks.

Although AltaVista didn't say what exactly is considered spam, we have

found a posting by AltaVista on their own bulletin boards on what they

consider to be spam. Below is what they have posted:

"AltaVista's goal is to provide you with the most relevant results

when you search. In order to maintain the integrity of the search

index and provide relevant search results, we must sometimes exclude

submissions that engage in techniques designed to manipulate the

  search results.

Examples of such manipulation include, but are not limited to, the

  following:

  - pages with text that is not easily read, either because it is too

small or is obscured by the background of the page,

  - pages with off-topic or excessive keywords,

  - duplication of content, either by excessive submission of the same

page, submitting the same pages from multiple domains, or submitting

the same content from multiple hosts,

  - machine-generated pages with minimal or no content, whose sole

purpose is to get a user to click to another page,

  - pages that contain only links to other pages, or

  - pages whose primary intent is to redirect users to another page.

AltaVista strives to deliver search results that provide accurate

information about the content of Web pages.

Accordingly, we reserve the right to remove and/or to disable links

to a Web site or Web page to which AltaVista has determined, in its

sole discretion, that improper steps have been taken to manipulate

AltaVista's search results. If you have any questions or concerns

about this policy or its implementation, please contact us by

  e-mail at: spam-support@av.com."

Another thing AltaVista mentioned was that they are planning a paid

submission services similar to that of Yahoo and Looksmart and that

they had not decided on what the fees would be.  Look for an

announcement coming from them soon.

We also asked about the recent problems with AltaVista submission page

displaying "Too many URLs have been submitted today."  The person we

spoke

to, did not know about this problem and told us that any such problems

should be reported to webmaster@altavista.com. He also mentioned that

new sites are now indexed within a day!  However, our recent

submissions have

taken anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to get

indexed.
