1- Intro
March was a month with very few changes occurring around the realm of
search engines and positioning. Small changes have taken place in
Sprinks, Overture, Wisenut.com, Open Directory Project, Kanoodle and a
new engine called Gigablast.com.
Albeit most of the changes have been small, we hope you will find the
information informative and valuable.

Spring Internet World Convention held April 24th through the 26th at the
Los Angeles Convention Center. Some of the largest and most powerful
companies online will be attending representing the following

2- Looksmart Buys Wisenut
On March 12, 2002 Looksmart acquired the new search engine Wisenut.com.
Wisenut has been recognized for its ability to provide highly relevant
search results and favorable comparisons have been made between Wisenut
and Google.
Looksmart claims that the acquisition was made in an effort to improve
the relevance of its search results. The transaction was valued at
$9.25 million and was an all-stock deal. No official comment has been
made regarding the incorporation of Wisenut's database into Looksmart's
search results or vice-versa. We believe that a visible relationship
will be made relatively soon. The result of this transaction may mean
trouble for Inktomi, which currently provides Looksmart's non-paid
search results.

3- New ODP Forum
Have you ever experienced the frustration of applying to the Open
Directory Project (ODP)? This powerful human edited directory supplies
website data to many search engines including Google & AOL. Therefore,
it is a requisite component of any successful search engine
optimization campaign. Unfortunately, since the ODP is edited by
volunteers, getting your website into the directory can be a real pain.
The ODP editors have responded by developing a new suite of public
message forums: www.resource-zone.com. This message board offers an
additional channel of communication between the general public and the
ODP editors. Direct questions regarding submissions, listings,
placement, becoming an editor, and other related issues can be
addressed.
We believe that this forum is a great idea as it will be a valuable
resource for those who are encountering difficulties with the ODP.

4- New Engine Launches with Instant Spidering
We do not normally write about the launch of new search engines, but
this month we were really turned on by an up-and-comer named
Gigablast.com.
This tiny little search engine offers surprisingly relevant search
results. Our tests revealed that the some results were comparable to
searches on Google. However, since Gigablast is so new, there are only
a few hundred thousand pages in its database. Database limitations
should not present a problem though, because the Gigablast database is
scalable to over 10 billion pages.
The most impressive feature of Gigablast is its ability to instantly
spider new URLs. This is a really cool feature that we have not seen
since the days of Infoseek. In our tests we were able to submit a URL
and have it included in the Gigablast database within five minutes.
According to the homepage the engine is in the pre-beta phase and a
stable version is due by May.
There is no way of knowing if this engine will grow in popularity, but
the rule in the search engine world is that when a new engine launches,
GET IN! We plan to add this engine to our free submission list soon.

5- Kanoodle Adds Google to Search Results
Kanoodle, in an effort to improve the quality of its search results has
recently finalized a partnership with Google.com. Kanoodle now
incorporates Google's search results following Kanoodle's paid
listings. A "Powered by Google" logo will appear at the bottom of
every page of Kanoodle search results that includes any Google
listings. This partnership will help establish Kanoodle's quality
search findings.
Other changes to the Kanoodle system will include a reduced the number
of search results appearing on any given page from 30 to 10 per page.
Kanoodle feels that this reduction will allow us to present a cleaner
and less cluttered "result set" in all situations, regardless of where
the consumers' interests lie. Kanoodle also feels that this will
chance the aesthetic value of the pages in hopes more consumers stick
around for longer user sessions.

6- Sprinks Ends Grand Fathered Bid Period
As you may recall, a few months ago the minimum bid to post a Sprinks
listing in a keyword search was raised to $.05 and the minimum bid to
post a Sprinks listing on an About Guide Site was raised to $.20. To
be fair to customers bidding at that time Sprinks allowed listings that
were already in place to remain at their posted amount, the
"grandfather period". The grand fathering period officially ended

7- Overture Extends New Services
In an effort to offer high-dollar clients additional and more thorough
service for their PPC accounts, Overture has unveiled new Gold and
Platinum service packages.
For advertisers spending less than $6,000.00 annually, the Premium
services offered include: telephone and e-mail support from client
service team, online account management using the Direct Traffic
Center, monthly reporting of account activity, search term suggestion
tool, premium bidding for search listings, search listing grouping via
Power Manager and the Overture news advertiser newsletter.
For advertisers whose budgets range from $6,000.00 to $60,000.00
annually, the new Gold Package includes all of the above-mentioned
services plus: priority telephone and e-mail customer service. While
being able to contact Overture editors is a valuable addition, the most
important new element is the priority treatment of new search listings,
which promises a significantly faster turn-around time on new keyword
additions.
For advertisers whose budgets exceed $60,000.00 annually, Overture is
now extending the Platinum service package, which includes all of the
above-mentioned services plus: personalized service from a dedicated
team of editors assigned exclusively to this group, individualized
consultation on editorial guidelines as well as search listing
optimization.
For all intents and purposes, Overture is essentially stepping up the
level of human interaction with top producing advertisers. With these
new packages, large advertisers will receive a substantially higher
level of customer service and custom support for their PPC campaigns.

8- Search Engines play April Fool's Jokes
Open Directory and Google decided to play April Fool's Joke on April
first.
Visitors to Open Directory (dmoz.org) on April 1st were surprised or
maybe shocked to see a Microsoft logo and that ODP was purchased by
Microsoft. This was odd to many since ODP is owned and operated by
AOL, a rival to Microsoft. A link with more details explained that the
new name is GOD (Gates Open Directory). You can see a snapshot graphic

Visitors to Google on April 1st may have noticed a link under the
search box titled "The technology behind Google's great results."
Clicking on this link took you to a page that explained how hundreds of
Pigeons are responsible for selecting what search results appear once a
