"Ask Jeeves" is quickly becoming one of the most used search engines.
Just recently it was ranked as the 10-th most popular search engine by
statmarket.com. In this issue we decided to write an article on how Ask
Jeeves works and how you can get your site listed with them.

2- Getting Listed in Ask Jeeves
Ask Jeeves - located at www.ask.com - is a search engine where instead
of typing keywords you can type questions. The displayed results will
first show the closest matching questions/answers from a pre-determined
list decided by the Ask Jeeves editors. Right after the primary
results, you will see some results displayed from other major search
engines such as Excite, AltaVista and Go.com.
A nice feature on the front page allows you to see some of the current
searches being done by others in real time.
Recently Ask Jeeves was ranked as the 10-th most popular search engine
by statmarket.com. Also, they have just purchased the search engine
company, Direct Hit, and provide search technology services to a number
of companies, including About.com, Infospace.com Inc., and AT&T
WorldNet. This makes Ask Jeeves a very important search engine to be
listed at.
To get listed in Ask Jeeves, you will need to email a request to
url@askjeeves.com. In the request, include your site URL and
description. We also recommend including a few questions that you
think people will use to search for your site. This will make the job
of the editors easier and improve your chances of getting in. However,
they have a very tough acceptance criteria (just like Yahoo) and you
will need to follow their Editorial Policy carefully before submission.
Here is their Editorial Policy for non-e-commerce sites:
1. Sites must load quickly.
2. Sites should be polished, easy to read, and easy to navigate
3. Sites should be well maintained and updated regularly.
4. Sites should offer thorough, unbiased information that answers a
user's question.
5. Sites should offer additional links or information related to the
user's question.
6. Sites must be credible sources of information. That is, they
should provide author and source citations, and contact
information.
7. Sites and site features must be free and available without
registration.

If you do not submit to Ask Jeeves via the above email address, you
still have a chance of getting in. As mentioned above, Ask Jeeves is
also a Metacrawler that queries listings from other major search
engines. If you have used our free submission and you have good
ranking in the major search engines, you will most probably be found at
Ask Jeeves for search questions related to your site.

- Ask Jeeves:
Ask Jeeves completes purchase of Direct Hit. Ask Jeeves plans to
integrate Direct Hit's technology into its corporate service, used by a
variety of companies to help reduce customer support costs.

- Excite:
Excite has not been indexing any new submissions for over 3 months.
Many of our free submission users have been asking us what is going on.
We will update you as soon as we hear that they are indexing again.
- Alta Vista:
AltaVista seems to be back on a more "normal" crawling schedule. It is
now taking 1-2 weeks to get sites listed in AltaVista.
- Fast Search (alltheweb.com):
Fast Search Announces World's Biggest Fastest Search Engine; 300
Million Web Pages Searched In Under One Half Second With Highly

Even though this is now the biggest search engine, it should not be
confused with the most popular search engine. However, we highly
recommend submitting your site to Fast Search, as it could quickly
become a popular search engine. Lycos recently announced that it is
investing in Fast Search and is planning on integrating Fast Search
