2- Online Success and Traffic Building Tips
I personally know a lot of people that have started their own sites and
achieved success. One common thing that all these people have is that
they are all hard workers. Nothing comes easy. You just need to find
one good idea and work hard at it and you will make it. You do not
necessarily have to have a computer science degree or be an expert web
designer, but you do need to be a sharp individual who can learn things
on your own quickly and be willing to spend long hours in front of the
computer. If you do not think you are this type of an individual, then
you will need to have big pockets or look for investors.
>From my own experience I can give you a few good tips on what to do to
make your site a success. If you start a site, traffic should be the
most important goal for your site. Once you have lots of traffic, you
can sell anything. You do not necessarily have to have the best looking
site. Something simple will work, as long as it looks legit and contains
your contact information. Here are few things I would recommend that
will help you grow your site's traffic:
- Come up with a good domain name/brand name. Having a root domain name
is very essential. Forget the free website providers. First of all they
do not look professional, and secondly the major search engines will
give a lower ranking to free-hosted sites; some search engines will even
block them from listing. If you don't have your own domain name, you can

- Optimize your site for better search engine placement. Search engines
are the number one way to get traffic to your site. You have three
options:
1) Do a lot of research and learn how to optimize yourself. A good

2) Hire a search engine optimization company to do this for you.
This may be a little costly if you are on a tight budget, but
will save you a lot of time and headache. In case you didn't

3) If you cannot afford search engine optimization, then you can

- Get lots of people to link to you. Two ways you can do this cheaply:

2) Offer a free service or product to webmasters in return for a
link back to your site
- Find cheap places to do pay-per-click advertising. Example would be
GoTo.com or any other fee based search engines. You can see a related

- Ask other high traffic sites to see if they will be willing to link to
you on a pay-per-click basis. You will need a tracking CGI script to
keep track of this. You need to figure out what is the most you can pay
per click and still make a profit from your site. To figure this out,
you need to know the conversion ratio of visitors to sales on your site.
Most sites have a conversion of around 1%.
- Ask similar sites to yours to link to you or offer them a link trade.
You can create a link page and offer others a link on that page in
return for a similar link. Link Popularity is now a major ranking factor
most search engines use. Make sure to submit the page of the person that
is linking to you to the search engines, so that the search engines can

- Start a newsletter. You can make it monthly at first, but once you
have over 1000 subscribers, you can do it more often. A newsletter will
allow you to keep in touch with visitors and offer them specials once in
a while. A person is more likely to buy your product or service the
more times they are exposed to your brand name. Also, the average person
will see your name at least 5-7 times before they buy your
product/service. As a bonus, you can sell advertising in your newsletter
once you have a lot of subscribers.
- Go to chat rooms and bulletin boards related to your business and
promote your business. Start a conversation related to your business
and then tell them about your services.
- Go to local internet related meetings, shows and conventions and
promote your business. Always have business cards handy so you can hand
them out to interested parties.
- Offer something for free and ask thousands of "Free Stuff" sites out
there to list you in their directories. Some ideas are: weekly
giveaway, contests, membership areas, newsletter subscription, free e-
books, free graphics, etc.
- If you have any advertising budget at all, do not waste it all at one
place. I would recommend to always test any type of advertising by doing
some test runs first, before committing to a large sum. You should
consider advertising online with Banner Ads, Newsletter Advertising and
Opt-in Email Advertising.
- If you have a newsworthy story do Press Release. Otherwise, be
creative and come up with something. For example, if you make any deals
or partnerships with any companies, even if it's a very small deal, put
out a news release and announce it to the world.
I hope my tips above will help you increase traffic to your site. There
are many more tips I could give you, but the above are the most
effective ways that any good marketer will tell you. However, one last
thing I would like to stress is that you need to find an idea that works
and give it at least 6 months to year to see the results. You may want
to find a niche market and become the best at it, or you may want to
follow others and try something that has already been done. There is
always room for more in this very rapidly growing net world.

LookSmart:
In the last issue we told you that LookSmart had discontinued its free
submission service. They appear to be experimenting with different
options. As of the time of writing this newsletter, they have brought
back an option for free submissions. We highly recommend submitting
your site right away, before they disable this option again.
To do a free submission at LookSmart, you will first need to find the
category you want to be listed in by following the category headings
down the tree and then choosing "Submit a Site" from all the way down on
the page.
Lycos/HotBot:
Lycos, which also owns HotBot, is going to be bought out by Terra
Networks, a Spanish internet service provider. See details at:

Lycos/FAST Search:
Lycos announced that their popularity has grown recently and that they
have made a deal with FAST Search to offer a larger database. They are
planning to offer a 1 billion URL database in the coming year. See

Inktomi:
Inktomi will acquire Ultraseek Corporation, which is part of Go.com
owned by Disney. Ultraseek is a stand-alone search engine, which
