2- Optin Email Advertising
Email advertising is quickly becoming one of the hottest direct
marketing mediums. Email accounts for 91% of online application usage,
according to Jupiter Communications. The number of email users has hit
122.6 million, according to a recent report by Nielsen/NetRatings.
Forrester Research predicts that the number of email boxes will grow by
about 50 percent from 1999 to 2003.
Many advertisers are beginning to realize the power of email marketing.
Email marketing now accounts for 15% of all online advertising dollars
spent, and no doubt this number will grow as email marketing has one of
the best click thru rates. Targeted opt-in email ads usually result in
a 5-15% click thru rate, while banner advertising rates are getting
lower every day. Currently, the industry average click thru rate for
banners ads are only 0.6%.
If you are interested in email advertising, there are a few things you
should know before you invest your time and money. The first thing is
to make sure that the list that you are buying or renting is 100% opt-
in, meaning that the subscribers have voluntarily signed up on the
lists. There are many scam artists out there that are selling junk
mailing lists. You need to be careful. Unsolicited email is considered
illegal, and there are now laws in most states enforcing this illegal
act. Just recently a new anti-spam legislation was also passed in

Many ISPs also have policies against allowing unsolicited commercial
email (UCE) in their networks. The ISP will bill a hefty amount per
email to anyone who sends spam email to their customers.
If you are considering email advertising, you must beware of anybody
who offers to sell you a list of millions of emails on a CD for real
cheap, usually $100-$300. You can be sure that these are names
collected via email harvesting software, and the owners did not give
permission for their email addresses to be used. This type of junk
email will have a very low click thru rate, as almost everybody will
delete the emails without reading them. The click thru rate for junk
email is less than 0.1%.
Normally, opt-in mailing lists cost anywhere from 10 cents to 30 cents
per name for a one-time lease. This in comparison is a lot cheaper
than traditional direct mail, which could cost approximately $1.30 per
customer after you factor in postage, packaging, list rentals, etc...
According to one Forrester estimate, email eliminates roughly 60
percent of the expenses of traditional direct mail.
With opt-in email advertising, you have the choice to choose from
various categories and demographics, therefore targeting your audience,
which will result in a high click thru rate. Best of all, you are
sending advertisement to people who have requested to receive such info
and you will see the results right away, which can also be tracked by
using special tracking URLs.

Google and Open Directory:
Google has added Open Directory (dmoz.org) to its search engine. You
will see the link to the directory sites when you search for any
keyword. The link will be under the search box of the results page.
The sites are also ranked based on Google's own ranking algorithm.
We have written previously about the importance of being listed at Open
Directory. Open Directory listings are used in several major search
engines such as Netscape Search, AOL Search, Lycos, HotBot and
AltaVista. If you are not already listed there, we highly recommend

RealNames:
Microsoft has taken 20% stake in RealNames. RealNames is a service
that allows keyword buying on some major search engines such as
AltaVista. Microsoft is going to include built-in support for
RealNames in its next version of the Internet Explorer browser.
