1- Intro

In this issue we will explain how search engines can detect duplicate
pages, specifically in AltaVista. Why, do you ask, is this important?
For many reasons - maybe you have two or more domain names being
pointed to the same page, or maybe you have an affiliate page and would
like it to be listed in the search engines. Unfortunately, search
engines will drop duplicate pages.  Read the details below.

Feel free to forward this email to all your friends that have websites

2- How to Avoid Having your Duplicate or Affiliate Pages Dropped from Search Engines

Search engines do not like to list duplicate content. Therefore they
have programmed their indexing algorithms to detect duplicate or near
duplicate web pages and drop them from listing.  Below we will tell you
how AltaVista can detect duplicate pages and what to do if you have
duplicate pages that you would like get listed in search engines.

Many people have one or more domain names pointing to the same page and
think that they can get additional traffic this way. However, it is no
use having several domain names with the same exact content, because
search engines can detect and drop these.

Some people will also join an affiliate program that gives them a
ready-to-go website and fall for the promises of the affiliate program
provider that all they have to do is promote their website URL address
in the search engines and they will make a lot of money. However,
normally websites like this will be identical, with maybe just the name
of the sponsor being different.  These have problems getting listed in
the search engines. An example of an affiliate page is:
http://www.virtualis.com/vr/pzarokia
which is an exact mirror page of http://www.virtualis.com

This above link is the page for our own affiliate program with
Virtualis.  This page is not editable by us.

In addition, some affiliate pages may be dynamically generated and may
contain a question mark "?" in the URL path.  These are also not
indexed by some search engines.

To avoid getting your sites dropped from search engines, it may help if
you know how search engines can detect duplicate pages. We have first-
hand information, from a very reliable source, on exactly how this is
done in AltaVista.  AltaVista was just awarded a patent for this
duplicate-page-detecting algorithm.  Other search engines may use
similar techniques, so it may help to know how one of the biggest
search engines does it.

AltaVista starts by first looking at pages that link to each other.
Many times websites will have links to pages similar in content. The
page titles, Meta tags and keywords used on the content of the page
will be compared to see if they have similar content.  All similar
pages will be recorded. Links to popular sites such as Yahoo.com will
be dropped from comparisons.  Once a set of similar pages are found,
AltaVista will then compare every single page to each other, using
another method explained below to see if they are duplicates.

AltaVista will look and compare the outgoing links on both pages that
may be duplicates. If both contain links to the same exact places and
the number of links on both pages is the same, then they will be
considered duplicates. We must also say that this will only be done
with sites using more than certain number of links. For example, sites
with less than 10 links may not be compared in this way. However, sites
that have a large number of links will be compared using this method.
AltaVista will choose a threshold such as 99%. If the number of links
in common is above this threshold, then the page may be considered a
duplicate page.

Another place search engines may use this type of algorithm is to
detect similar pages; not for exclusion, but rather providing the
searcher with more options.  For example, you may have seen the
"related pages" link in the search results of AltaVista or "similar
pages" link in the search results of Google.  For finding similar pages
AltaVista uses a lower threshold number such as 90% or 95%.  If the
number of links in common is higher than that, then they are considered
similar pages.

The AltaVista duplicate-page-detecting algorithm can detect exact
duplicate pages and very close pages, and once they are detected one or
all the pages may be dropped. AltaVista may run this algorithm once in
a while when they run a filter program to clean up their database. So
it may be possible that your page may get listed at first, but get
dropped after some time.

Other search engines may use slightly different methods of detecting
duplicate pages. Another technique could be to compare files size and
some of the text on each page.

One particular example of this is pages provided by link generating
services such as www.linkstoyou.com. We highly recommend staying away
from services like this. A few months ago AltaVista ran their filter
and dropped all sites using linkstoyou.com pages, because they consider
this service to be spamming methods to artificially improve rankings.

This type of duplicate-page-detection algorithm is used by robot based
search engines only. Human based directories such as Yahoo also do not
accept duplicate pages. However, human based directories may detect
duplicate pages by visually inspecting your page for such things as a
company name that is common with other sites and affiliate program
links.

You may ask if there is a way that you can get duplicate or affiliate
pages listed.  We will now tell you how you can do this.

For those that have several domain names pointing to the same page, the
only way to get all pages listed in the search engines is to get each
domain name hosted separately, meaning that each domain must have its
own directory for file upload.  You will then need to modify the
content on pages so they appear slightly different. We recommend
changing the title tag, Meta tags, some of the content on the page and
especially the links. Make sure that the pages have at least 10% or
more non-common links.

For those that have affiliate pages and are not able to edit their own
pages, you may be out of luck unless you have some web design expertise
or can afford to hire a web designer.  The problem is that most
affiliate web page providers will not allow you to edit your page to
make it look different than others.  You will need to get a new page,
preferably your own domain name and hosting.  You will then need to
optimize this page for your keywords and place links from this page to
your affiliate site, or you can use a redirection to automatically
point to your affiliate page. However, you also need to be careful when
using redirections. Most redirections are considered spam by search
engines and may again result in dropping your page. Specifically, some
search engines will drop pages using Meta Refresh tags. However a
JavaScript redirection may not be detectable. Once you create a new
page, you will need to submit this to the search engines and it will
have no problems getting listed.

There are also other techniques that can be used that a search engine
optimization expert may know of that may get you very good results for
your affiliate pages or duplicate pages, if you are willing to spend
some money. If so, take a look at our optimization services.
