In a press release on November 8, David Peterschmidt, president and CEO of Inktomi, stated that "we believe the combination of LookSmart's editorial expertise and our technology will create a tremendously valuable content infrastructure for the emerging generation of specialized web services. By enabling highly customized and flexible content directories, Inktomi and LookSmart are delivering a key ingredient to the emerging vertical portal market." It appears that LookSmart will be adopting Inktomi's search engine and directory software technology to increase the number of sites listed in its directory. In our opinion, this merger is definitely a good thing for both website owners and net users, since everyone will be able to take advantage of a larger pool of specific and highly organized information on the web. As of now we do not know when the fruits of this merger will go into effect, nor do we know what the nature of the ranking algorithms will be. Well, these terms were even very hard for me to understand in the beginning, because nobody really bothered to post what they meant. Below we will explain what these terms mean, because you are bound to run into them if you are planning to do any online marketing or sell advertising on your own site. CPM - Cost Per Mille (thousand): This is the cost per 1000 impressions (impressions is the term used for each time a banner or a site is displayed). Current average industry CPM for banner advertising is $34.98. This means that banner advertisers pay on average $34.98 for 1000 displays of their banners. CTR - Click Thru Rate: This is the percentage of visitors that click on a banner out of all the visitors to the site where the banner is displayed. Current average CTR is 0.6%. This means that on average, out of every hundred visitors to a site, less than one person clicks on a banner. CPC - Cost Per Click: This is the cost per click on the banner or link. Very few places offer CPC advertising, but many advertisers prefer this method because they know exactly how much they are paying per click. CPS - Cost Per Sale: This is the price of an advertising campaign for one sale. To get a low CPS, you will need a low CPM rate and a high CTR rate. ROI - Return On Investment - This is the effectiveness of your efforts in converting visitors into Sales, Leads, or Actions. A low CPM will lead to a high ROI. Therefore, your goal should be to have effective but low advertising costs in order to achieve the highest possible ROI. When you put together the average CPM rate today, which is $34.98, and average CTR of 0.6%, it will mean that on average advertisers will pay $34.98 for 6 visitors, or $5.83 for one visitor. Well, you may ask, how can you get some of these advertisers to advertise on your site? AltaVista has admitted that they have lost many sites that were submitted after September. We recommend that you do a search for your URL by typing www.yourdomain.com in the search box; if your site does not show, then resubmit your page from: http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html The pages we submitted on 10/25 and 10/26 are now listed, but it took about two weeks before they were listed. We expect that AltaVista will come back to the normal processing of listing sites within 2-3 days soon. We will update you in the next issues when this happens. MSN Search: A couple of months ago we reported that MSN search was using AltaVista for its backend. MSN search has changed yet once again. They are now using LookSmart for their primary results. If there are not enough listings in LookSmart, then the AltaVista results are shown. MSN Search is also incorporating DirectHit in their results. When you do a search for a popular term, you will see a link on top saying: "Top 10 most popular sites." If you click on this, you will see the results from DirectHit.
