2- How to Use Keywords for Best Placement
Keywords are perhaps the single most important aspect to a successful
website. You may have an excellent site, but if the masses cannot find
it, what's the point? Most webmasters already know this, and some of
the new netrepreneurs are catching on to this one ingredient for
success.
Please read on to learn some good points on how to position yourself
with a top placement in the major search engines. The advice below
should help you increase your traffic. These tips should also help you
in general when you are searching for other sites of interest.
-Determine 10-30 keywords that are the most important to your
website.
-Place these keywords in the TITLE, META Tags and the page body.
-The Title tag is the single most important ranking factor in many
major search engines. If you want to have a top 10 ranking on a
certain keyword, make sure that it appears in the title.
-Keywords contained in "Heading" text or <H1> tag will help boost
your ranking for that keyword in most major search engines.
-Keywords placed in links will also help boost your ranking for
that keyword.
-Include keywords in the image ALT tags and in a COMMENT tag.
-Do not use just single term keywords, as these are very
competitive. Rarely anybody searches for websites with single term
keywords these days.
-Use some uncommon keywords and misspellings as well.
-Use different keywords on different pages of your site and submit
all of them to the search engines.
-Create some "doorway pages" that look like your main page, but
concentrate on different keywords for them. Submit the doorway
pages to the search engines as well.
-Type in your keywords in the search engines and look up the
keywords used on your competitors' sites. Use those on your page
as well.
-Look up some of your keywords in a thesaurus to find some related
ones that you haven't thought of before.
-Use a statistics counter or check your log files to see what
keywords people are finding you with. If your server or website
provider does not provide you with a log file, then we recommend
using TheCounter.com's counter as it keeps track of search engine
traffic and the last 10 keywords used to find your site. This
will help you track down keywords that bring you the most traffic.
-Do not over use keywords as the search engines will consider this
spam and it will result in a penalized ranking. We recommend
using 2-6 keywords per 100 words on each page.

4- Search Engine News: AltaVista Drops Many Sites
Last week AltaVista had a major revamp to its site. They have
implemented some major changes to be more competitive with sites such
as Yahoo, Excite and AOL. AV now uses Netscape's Open Directory Project
database for their directory section. In the process they have also
dumped many websites from their database and have also adjusted their
search results algorithm slightly.
Below are some general things we have noticed which are in no way the
official word from AltaVista and may change anytime within the next few
weeks as the new changes settle down:
-AV now uses "grouping" to group search results from the same
domain names. Some results will display a link that says: "[More
pages from this site]," which will lead you to see more results
from the domain in question.
-It looks like the sites that have been dropped out are mostly the
newer submissions. Most sites submitted after June or July do not
show up, unless there was a prior submission.
-We also noticed that most sites now display a size of 10k or 11k.
This seems to be an error as not all the sites that we checked had
these exact sizes. We expect AltaVista to correct this problem
soon and that this is just a space filler for now.
-Some search results contain a link to [Company factsheet], which
leads to a page with company info and other domain names
registered by that company.
-We received a report from a visitor saying that almost all his
adult site listings have dropped out. According to him, he had
over 50,000 listings on several domains before and now there are
only 5-10 pages left. We will leave the conclusion up to you, as
we cannot be sure if this is the norm for all adult sites.
-None of the pages we submitted on Monday 10/25 have showed up,
even though the listing turn around time is supposed to be 1-2
days. However, it looks like that a few pages submitted by others
have been listed since 10/25, when you do a search by date in the
advanced mode.
At this point we recommend that you check AltaVista for your listings
by your URL, and if you cannot find it, resubmit it. It is possible
that in the next few days or weeks the old listings may come back, but
we recommend you resubmit your pages anyway, so that you are not left
out.
We would like to hear back from you, if you had any unusual experience
with AltaVista or any other major search engines. If you report your
problems or any new findings and it turns out that they affect many
people, we may use them in a future issue.
