2- Yahoo Submission Tips - Part II
We wrote an article back in June 99, titled "Yahoo Submission Tips." If
you have missed this article, please go back to the link below to read
it before continuing with this article:
http://www.submitexpress.com/newsletters/june99_yahoo.html
Yahoo currently is responsible for around 40% of all search engine
traffic. This traffic could be even higher for sites that have good
rankings in Yahoo. So it is very important to get your site listed in
Yahoo, even if you have to pay their $200.00 submission fee. Below are
some tips on how to get your site listed in Yahoo and to achieve a good
ranking.
Unlike other robot based search engines, Yahoo is an entirely human
edited directory and does not index site content with robots that will
crawl sites to pick up keywords. Therefore, search engine optimization
techniques used for robot based search engines will not work with Yahoo.
Yahoo bases site ranking on the keywords included in your site title,
description and URL submitted to them. Therefore it is essential to try
to come up with a good description that includes your most important
keywords. You don't have much choice to include keywords in your site
Title, because your site title must be your official site name or
business name. If you include extra words in your title, the Yahoo
editors will edit it.
If you are going to start a brand new site or a new business, consider
choosing a title or business name that has your most important keywords.
Including keywords in the URL will also help your ranking in Yahoo.
Per the Yahoo criteria, your description must be 25 words or less.
However, if you do submit a 25-word description, in most cases, Yahoo
editors will edit it down to around 5-10 words. If you take a look at
existing listings at Yahoo, you will rarely find a listing that is 25
words long. Most listings are less than 10 words, and there are many
sites that do not even have a description.
Our recommendation is to come up with the best 10-word description you
can that includes your keywords. Rather than risking your description
being edited by Yahoo when it's too long, just send a shorter
description and you will have a better chance of getting it listed the
exact way you submitted.
Another option would be to come up with a 2-sentence description. The
first sentence will be a 10-word description as explained above, and the
2nd sentence will include more info about your site. Chances are Yahoo
will just drop the second part of your description, but if you are lucky
enough the full description may get accepted.
All paid submissions that get accepted will receive an email from Yahoo
stating so. For free submissions, you may or may not get an email from
Yahoo stating that your site got listed. It usually will take 2-4
business days from receiving this email to see your listing. You should
review your listing title, description and category as soon as it shows
up to make sure everything is as you would like. If not, reply to the
email you received, which came from the editor reviewing your site, and
request a modification. We have had good success with this in the past.
Yahoo also uses Link Popularity for site rankings. Link Popularity means
that the more sites linking to you, the better your rankings will be.
For more on Link Popularity and how you can improve this, please see our
July 99 and Nov. 30, 99 issues at:
http://www.submitexpress.com/newsletters/index.html
We have also noticed that Yahoo is now tracking click through and may
start using Click Through Popularity as a ranking factor sometime in the
future.
Finally, Yahoo uses Google as its secondary search engine database. If
there are not enough listings in the Yahoo directory, then Yahoo will
pull results from the Google search engine. Yahoo recently switched to
Google from Inktomi. Inktomi still provides search results for some
major search engines such as HotBot and LookSmart.
It is very easy to get your site listed in Google. You can submit your
site to Google from their add URL page at:
http://www.google.com/addurl.html
Your site will be listed on their next index update, which may take
anywhere from a week to 6 weeks.
For most common term searches at Yahoo, there will be many listings
coming from Yahoo first. Therefore, the Google listing may not help you
achieve a good ranking. However, if there are some not-so-common terms
used to locate your site, then there is a chance your site may show up
in the Google results. Google uses Link Popularity as its primary
ranking factor. Make sure to use our tips from the previous issues
mentioned above to improve your link popularity.
We hope the tips above will help you achieve a better placement in
Yahoo. If you are having trouble getting your site listed in Yahoo,
please look out for "Yahoo Submission Tips - Part III", coming soon
either in September 30th or October 15th issue.
