KEEPING TRACK OF PENGUIN UPDATES

Did you feel that rumble? Was it another Penguin update? It’s hard to keep track of every time Google makes an adjustment to its Penguin algorithm, or webspam filter. But as far as we know Google usually announces Penguin updates, which means if they haven’t announced it yet, it probably didn’t happen.

Search Engine Land reported that Google has confirmed that there have been no updates to the Penguin algorithm since the last one announced on October 5, 2012. Including the last refresh, there have been three major Penguin updates:

Penguin 1: April 24, 2012

Penguin 2: May 26, 2012

Penguin 3: October 5, 2012

However, it doesn’t mean that Google isn’t hard at work on updating Panda, an algorithm aimed at analyzing website quality, and one that gets refreshed on a monthly basis. According to Search Engine Land, the last Panda refresh (Panda Update 24) occurred on January 22, 2013, affecting about 1.2 percent of English based queries. Considering we’re nearly at the end of February, another Panda refresh should be coming soon. Hold on!
