2- Search Engine Strategies Report

Two weeks ago we attended the annual Search Engine Strategies
Conference in San Francisco, California. This incredible conference was
organized by Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch and Internet.com.
This year, for the first time ever, the conference took place over two
days rather than one.  Representatives from several of the major search
engines were on hand to tell us about their businesses. Representatives
from Alta Vista, Fast - All The Web, Google, Goto, Excite, Northern
Light, Looksmart, DMOZ and Inktomi were in attendance.

A unique mixture of industry professionals attended the two-day
conference including web masters, SEO companies, and business owners
all eager to learn about the latest tricks and tactics to market web
sites.

Lectures were given on such topics as: how to leverage site content,
how to choose an SEO, cloaking, how to write ad copy for search engines
amongst dozens of other seminars were offered.

While there was good information in most of the seminars, some of the
most beneficial information came from representatives of the search
engines themselves.

The major news of the conference was AltaVista's launch of the Trusted
Feed program, which is a new pay for inclusion program based on a cost-
per-click (CPC) model. For more info about this, please read section 3
of this newsletter.

There was a lot of information presented that was primarily targeted to
beginners. However, there was some new information that provided
insight into search engine optimization development for professionals.

Below, some of the most important information that I picked up is
posted, and I hope that it will help some of our readers:

- Inktomi: Spammers can be reported to spamcrusader@inktomi.com and the
reporter will be entered to win a Paid Submission.

- AltaVista: The AltaVista submission puzzle can be very hard to read
sometimes. AltaVista revealed that the letter "L" and "I" are
considered the same and as well as "0" (zero) and "O". If you have not
seen the AltaVista submission puzzle, you can see it at:

http://add-url.altavista.com/cgi-bin/newurl?

We had a chance to chat with one of the AltaVista reps and we found out
that AltaVista is working on adding a Country field on the free and
paid submission pages. This will make their search engine return more
relevant results based on what country the visitor is searching from.
Additionally, existing sites in the AltaVista database will be
evaluated using a link analysis method in order to <cut out> decide
which country the site is from.

- Google: Google will refresh most sites every 28 days and some news
sites such as CNN more often.

Google can detect most forms of spam automatically and will also review
results manually for spam.

- Yahoo: When users pay for the Yahoo! Express submission, they need to
find their category first and then click on the "Suggest a Site" link
on the bottom of the page. However, if the correct category is unknown,
users can submit their page from the link below and Yahoo will decide
the category:

http://add.yahoo.com/fast/add?+Business

Users are encouraged to only suggest a 2nd category if it is not
related to the first one and only if the first category is not a sub-
category of the second one or vise versa.

If you need to suggest a modification to your site and you do not
remember the original email, you can guess the email and make a note of
it in the comments box and Yahoo will investigate.

Any listing problems can be reported to url-support@yahoo.com.

Although Yahoo does not have a paid change request form, change
requests can be done through the Yahoo! Express Submission. If the
editor replies back and says that the site is already listed, you can
reply and explain the problem or make a modification request.

- LookSmart: LookSmart updates sites daily and their partner sites like
MSN Search will usually be updated weekly.

- Open Directory:  AOL and Netscape will update their listings usually
once per week, but sometimes it may take up to 3 weeks. Google updates
their Open Directory portion once per week.

Open Directory new editor applications will take about 2 weeks to
review. The acceptance rate is approximately 15%.

- Dynamic Pages: Dynamically generated pages usually have problems
getting in search engines. Here is where some of the search engines
stand regarding this:

      - Google: Dynamic Pages are OK. If anybody is having a problem an
        email request can be sent.
      - Inktomi: Dynamic pages are OK up to a certain number per site
      - FAST Search: Dynamic pages on the root URL are OK, but not the
rest. Also, "?" in the URL path is not OK.
      - AltaVista: Dynamic Pages are OK.

3- AltaVista Launched new CPC based Paid Inclusion Program

At the San Francisco Search Engine Strategies conference, AltaVista
announced that it had launched a new Cost per Click (CPC) based pay for
inclusion program called "Trusted Feed."

This new program is designed for sites with over 500 URL's. The program
allows submission of titles, keywords and descriptions different than
those on the site. The ranking of the sites will also be based on these
criteria.

The Trusted Feed program has a very sophisticated tracking system that
AltaVista was demonstrating at the conference.

More information has been posted on AltaVista website at:

4- Excite@Home in Trouble

investors that it may be in financial trouble according to a U.S.
