2- Go.com is Going Away

Go.com (formerly Infoseek), which is owned by Disney, announced that
Go.com will be shutting down.  This announcement came as a surprise to
many, specially since Go.com had just started a fee-based placement
program. Go.com is looking for a buyer to sell parts of its assets
including the search engine and the Go Guides human based directory.

Infoseek, which then became Go.com, was acquired by Disney back in
1998.  Infoseek started in 1995 and was one of the first major search
engines in existence. When acquired by Disney, it turned
to a portal offering many other services such as news, stock quotes and
free email services.

Sometime in 1999, Disney changed the name of Infoseek to Go.com.
However, the name and Logo similarity to GoTo.com resulted in a law
suite from GoTo.com, which Go.com ended up loosing and paying millions
of dollars in addition to being forced to changing its logo.

In early 2000, Go.com announced that it would now turn Go.com into a
Disney portal, concentrating only on entertainment.  However, this move
was not that popular amongs visitors and site popularity started to
drop.

Go.com's main reason for closing was that they were not one of the
leading portals and that they were falling behind.

Disney will continue to operate its other web sites such as Disney.com
and ABC.com. But Go.com features will be streamlined until the end of
February, when the site will completely close. Already, parts of Go.com
have been removed. We noticed that "ADD URL" button has been removed
from the bottom of the page and the GO Guides login page has also been
removed.

As of yet, Go.com does not have any offers from any parties interested
in purchasing Go.com search engine or directory. We hope that a buyer
would be found soon.
For now we are also removing our automated free submission to Go.com
from our page until it is clear what will happen to the Go.com search
engine.

3- Yahoo Launches Sponsorship Program

Yahoo has launched a fee-based sponsorship program that will allow
search results for the sponsors to be placed in a box before all
regular listings under its categories.

Up to 5 results will be displayed under the sponsored results and if
more than 5 sponsors pay for this space, the sponsors will be rotated
equally. The sponsor spots will be available to current Yahoo listed
sites only. The current listing of the sponsors will be listed in bold.

For now sponsorship is restricted to all sub categories under "Business
to Business" and "Shopping & Services."

The price will range from $25 to $300 a month for most categories and
it will be over $300/month for competitive categories. A self service
ordering would be available for those sites that cost less than $300/m
and for those over $300/m a contact form is presented which will be
forwarded to Yahoo Sales department. A sales person will then contact
the interested party and inform them of the price.

If your site is currently listed in Yahoo, you can go to the below page
to see how much it would cost to place an order for your site:
