1- Intro

In this issue we decided to publish an article submitted by Vad
Borziak, who is owner of Angelica Introduction, an international
introduction agency and co-founder of FREE advertising Club located at

Mr. Borziak will explain his success with getting his site listed in
small and targeted directories.  We thought his article was informative

2- Small Directories vs. Big Search Engines/Directories

Ninety percent of Internet users use major search engines and
directories for Internet searches. Lets see if those engines are the
best tools for Internet search.

WEBMASTERS AND SEARCH ENGINES

The good thing about search engines is that they have big databases
with huge traffic. If you can get on top in search engines- you win. If
you cannot - do not worry much.

The thing that is not so good about search engines is that your
position in search results depends on many factors. You may have a good
ranking on one or two keywords, but any combinations of those words
will bring your site on different level in search results which may be
anywhere in between 1,000 and 10,000.  We all know that the listing
after the first 100 positions does not affect your traffic.

Today, we often hear that search engines are dropping large portions of
their databases making room for new marketing and positioning
promotions. More and more engines and directories are turning toward
paid listings many with no guarantee to be listed.

INTERNET USERS AND SEARCH ENGINES

All of the above leave you with much less choice in your Internet
search. Very often all sites listed first in search result may not
necessary be the best to deal with. These days thousands of great sites
are buried beneath the paid listings, which might be better than those
you find. More over, you are most likely familiar with the situation of
getting unrelated results in your own searches.

DO SEARCH ENGINES WORK FOR YOU?

For the past couple of years I have been submitting to major search
engines and directories. I changed meta tags, used other tricks and
resubmitted again. I saw my site listed on top in some search engines.
However, once again, this top listing absolutely depended on one
keyword. How many users will search on that word? Nobody can say. The
traffic produced by search engines was very low. Finally, I realized
that I made a very common mistake that almost all webmasters make. They
spend too much time on search engine promotion.

WHERE ELSE DOES THE MAJOR TRAFFIC COME FROM?

Three years ago I was involved in one of the biggest industries:
Internet dating business. The main activity of my agency
(http://abat.com) is to introduce Eastern European women to men from
all over the world. My target audience was very small and widely spread
throughout the world. It's a so-called "niche market." I registered my
site in some smaller specialized directories, which focus specifically
on the dating industry.  The result of this type of promotion was
absolutely amazing! The traffic from those dating directories became
the major (about 90%) source of referrals for my business.

HOW DO SPECIALIZED DIRECTORIES BENEFIT YOU?

- You get the most targeted traffic possible.
It is very important that you list your site in the correct
directories. For example, if you are offering a product for single men,
you should list your site in the dating directories.  Any other
unrelated directories will not produce as much for you.

- You get your listing fast and it's free.
Most directories will list your site for free. If a directory asks for
a link back to the directory, go for it. It's worth it and it does not
cost you anything. In addition, you can be listed in the directory very
fast, in some cases a few weeks.

- The more directories that link to your site, the higher your link
popularity rating will be. The higher your link popularity gets, the
better you do in regular search engines like AltaVista or Google. 

- By listing your site in as many directories as possible you are
marketing your brand name and improving your credibility. These two may
be much more important than anything else.

GET THE MOST FROM THE DIRECTORY

After you put your site in the directories your main task is to get
listed on the best and most visible spots in the directory. You may
want to pay for placing your banner on the highest visible spot in the
directory. You can also pay for placing your text link in the first
positions. My experience shows that text links pull more traffic than a
banner ad and they're usually cheaper.  Advertising rates in special
directories are significantly cheaper than major search engines. Your
site position is crucial if the list in the directory is long.

WHERE DO YOU FIND SPECIAL DIRECTORIES?

The first proven way is to check you competitors' sites. On the main
page (or "links" page) you may find links or banners pointing to the
directories where your competitor is listed.

Another great way is to find the so-called "directory of directories,"
which lists many special categorized directories. I have found only one
so far, http://allwebdirectories.com, so you may want to check it out.
I find it very handy.

The third is to search the Internet's major search engines. Just type
in several keywords related to your topic and see if you can find the
directory you need.

3- Google Acquires Usenet Discussion Service from Deja.com

Google Inc. announced that it has acquired Deja.com's Usenet Discussion
Service. This acquisition provides Google with Deja's entire Usenet
archive (dating back to 1995), software, domain names including
deja.com and dejanews.com, company trademarks, and other intellectual
property. Financial terms of this transaction were not released.

Available now at http://groups.google.com, this powerful new Usenet
search feature enables Google users to access the wealth of information
contained in more than six months of Usenet newsgroup postings and
message threads. Once the full Deja Usenet archive is added, users will
be able to search and browse more than 500 million archived messages
with the speed and efficiency of a Google search. In addition to
expanding the amount of searchable data, Google will soon provide
improved browsing capabilities and newsgroup posting.
