Microsoft Launches New Search Engine

Microsoft Corp. last week unveiled its newest search engine, Bing, which will be available worldwide on June 3. Designed to replace Live Search and complete with the other leading search engines, Bing isn't dubbed a "Google Killer" just yet; however, it does offer a few specialized features that are worth mentioning.

According to the official press release, Microsoft focused on three design goals when creating Bing: "deliver great results; deliver a more organized experience; and simplify tasks and provide insight, leading to faster, more confident decisions." In order to provide better search results, Bing helps locate relevant search results through numerous specialized features, including Deep Links, allowing more information about the amount of resources a particular site has to offer. In terms of providing a more organized experience, Bing offers several features that are unique from Google or Yahoo! search engines, including Related Searches and Quick Tabs, a table of contents for different categories of search results. For example, a search for the term "France" reveals a list of results grouped under several categories, including France map, France history, France culture, and France tourism.

In addition to serving as a regular search engine, Bing specializes in helping users extract information pertaining to four key areas: making a purchase decision, planning a trip, researching health conditions, and finding a local business. When a consumer uses Bing to shop online, for example, the Sentiment Extraction feature searches the Web for user opinions and expert reviews to help the customer make a better informed purchase decision. When using Bing Travel, the Rate Key feature allows customers to compare locations, prices, amenities, and provides an easy-to-read summary of the best deals.
