Microsoft integrates Twitter data into Bing search results

The San Jose Mercury News reported on Wednesday that Microsoft has scored a coup in its attempts to make its Bing search engine competitive with industry leader Google. Bing will now allow people to search and filter Twitter's stream of real-time data, not only giving a significant feature set advantage over Google but creating a possible major source of revenue for Twitter.

"You're able to really improve the ability to search the Twitter stream," said Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft's online audience business, who demonstrated the new Bing features to an audience of several hundred tech leaders and journalists in San Francisco.

One example given was that sports fans could now search Bing for information about the New York Yankees along with news and opinion posts from Twitter, favoring Tweets with breaking news or from Twitter users with many followers.

Microsoft spokespeople said that the Twitter upgrade is just the first in a series of improvements that will be coming down the pipeline in the near future. A similar deal with Facebook has also been reached, although the implementation of Facebook data into Bing has not been completed.
