Has Simon Cowell Turned to SEO Help?

Former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell earned the reputation as being the "King of Mean" for his acidic putdowns of wannabe music superstars who were trying out for the show. But now that Cowell has left "American Idol" to launch the U.S. version of his British hit show "X Factor" he apparently wants to repair his reputation, and he's turning to search engine optimization to do it.

The New York Daily News reports that several observers believe that Cowell has turned to an SEO firm to help him increase the positive online image surrounding his name. They point to the fact that web searches on his name include many seemingly innocuous articles that reflect Cowell in a positive light (such as his receiving a fan letter from Wayne Newton) while you need to search deeper to find the many negative stories about Cowell.

Cowell's publicist Ann-Marie Thompson has brushed suggestions that Cowell is using an SEO firm off as a "conspiracy theory" but other people aren't so sure. The format of "X Factor" involves Cowell and other judges taking a more hands-on role as mentors to different singers and musical acts, so it stands to reason that he would be interested in improving the view the public has of him and presenting himself in a more positive light before the show launches.
