Yahoo! To Shut Down Site Explorer

Yahoo! announced today it plans to discontinue Yahoo! Site Explorer, an SEO tool that has been around for nearly six years. Webmasters are encouraged to use Microsoft's Webmaster Tools as the source for Bing and Yahoo! webmaster site and analytic data.

Although Yahoo! could not give an exact date of the shutdown, the company said it has been teaming with Microsoft to transition organic results in all markets to the Microsoft platform as part of the Yahoo! & Microsoft Search Alliance. Although the transition of algorithmic search results for Yahoo! Search result pages is complete for U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil and Mexico markets, Site Explorer is expected to disappear sometimes later this year once the transition is complete in all markets.

Despite the news, webmasters should not stop using Site Explorer just yet. According to Yahoo!, it is vital for the company to continue to receive site/sitemap submissions in order for search results from Yahoo! to remain "fresh and relevant for markets that have not switched over."

"The Bing Webmaster Center team has been actively adding new features over the past few months, including detailed traffic statistics and a new inbound links feature," wrote Hemant Minocha, Product Manager at Yahoo! Site Explorer. He added, "Microsoft is also committed to build analytic reports that include Yahoo! search usage."

What does this mean for search engine optimization? Once the transition is complete, you won't have to optimize for Yahoo! and Bing Search engines separately.
